Crackle Glass
Crackle glass was developed by the master glassblowers of Venice during the 16th century . The beautiful crackle effect is made by submerging the very hot glass briefly into cold water during the glass-forming process. This causes the outer layer of glass to crack, giving crackle glass that classic, crinkly look. When the glass is reheated and enlarged (by using a blowpipe similar to normal glassblowers) the cracks enlarge.
Crackle glass (sometimes spelled “craquelle”) didn’t become fashionable until the late 1800′s. Many glass houses produced crackle glass during the period 1920 – 1960, but very few products have been made since then.
